She Gets It Done: Meet Producer and Creative, Tamika Jamison

Please tell us a little bit about you, your business and where you are from?

I am a creative, and I'm a producer and entrepreneur. Ultimately, what I do is I take an idea and I make it into a tangible thing, whether that be an experience, an event, or a festival. I write and preach stories. I do literary works. I also have a memoir podcast, and I'm working on an unscripted show now as well that's going to be focused around healing and self-love. And I’m from Fort Worth, Texas.

How do you prepare mentally, physically, spiritually to achieve your goals?

Well, mentally, organization is key. So, I always make sure that I am staying organized with my calendar. My workspace at home is organized. I have set goals for the week and for the month and I stick to those things. Organization will help me not be overwhelmed so that I can stay focused.

Physically, I go for nature walks about three times a week. I go to the gym at least one or two days out the week. So, I always make sure that I get some type of physical activity in for at least 30 minutes. And it's not about looking good, but it literally is about just feeling good. Your body needs physical activity just to stay healthy. And going for nature walks and breathing fresh air, it always kind of like hugs my soul. So, it helps a lot.

Spiritually, I go to church almost every Sunday. I pray every day. I pray every night. I just have conversations with my spiritual guiders. I have a strong faith in believing in the power within myself, also in God, and also my ancestors. I have a strong discernment of good things, good spirits. So, I try to stay connected to those things through prayer.

What do you do when challenges and obstacles interrupt your plans?

Well, I adjust. When things really kind of interrupt, I get upset and annoyed at the fact that it wasn’t the key, the direction, or the answer. And I just figure out a new approach. That's literally how I approach everything. I do not stand still. I do not feel defeated. I do not allow that answer to stand. I literally figure out a way to keep the plan moving forward. And if I feel that the plan has served its purpose, then I put it to bed and start something new.

Tell us about an accomplishment that you're especially proud of and why.

My main accomplishment was when I was 23. That's my biggest accomplishment. I was 23, I dropped out of school, and I quit my job, and I've been able to live my days out like I want to. I haven't had to check into a job. I've been able to travel when I want to. I mean, I really just have the life that I've always desired and wanted. I'm not controlled by anybody other than the regular day-to-day bills. So, I pretty much try to stay on track with everything. And that's my biggest accomplishment.

Who are your role models and mentors in the business world, and how have they influenced you?

My role models in the business world are similar peers, people that are also actively creating and living out their dreams and daring to do extraordinary things. Tara McMillan was one of my earliest inspirations. I aspire to have a career similar to hers. Now, in current years, I admire Issa Rae's career. I like how she has been able to be a storyteller and create things she is passionate about. She definitely influences my work, and her character on *Insecure* reflects much of what I do in real life. I am a community activist, I create events for the community, and I uplift artists.
