She is Making History: Meet Courtney Hall

Courtney Hall is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate, a Certified Birth Doula, and a Certified Mindfulness-Informed Professional.

Please tell us a little bit about you, your business and where you are from?

I'm Courtney Hall, I'm from High Point, NC which is a small town outside of Greensboro, NC. I'm a wife, and mom of THREE BOYS and a girl pup! My background is social work. I earned my undergraduate degree in Social Work from the prestigious North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. I earned my Masters' degree in Social Work from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated (NC A&T - Alpha Phi Chapter 2007).

I have served the community of Greensboro and surrounding areas as a school social worker and a Mental Health Coordinator for Guilford County School System. As the owner of Bump.Baby.Bliss. Doula, Counseling, & Ultrasound Studio. We provide services that will give our community a much-needed resource in birth preparation and education.

I truly have a passion for maternal health and for helping couples. Since I can remember, as a little girl, I have always been intrigued by the woman’s anatomy and how women can produce and carry babies. Being an advocate and providing support emotionally and physically to families is truly rewarding. As an adult and becoming a parent myself, I realized that the mental health of women (before, during, and after pregnancy) is important! Even for men, too.

My goal is to continue to serve our culture and others by educating upcoming doulas and families to trust in what is BEST for them. We are all looked at as customers and my job is not to be against the doctors, but to encourage you to advocate for yourself and be aware of your body and your needs. Having a birth doula and mental health support for you and your family should not be considered a luxury, it is a NECESSITY.

What has been your biggest obstacle whether professionally or personally, and how did you overcome it?

My biggest obstacle professionally has been constantly proving my worth for positions and to be heard and valued in different work environments. I'm DONE with that. I know what I know, I have the degrees, certifications, positive reviews and other artifacts to back it up. There is ALWAYS room for growth and effective criticism but it's hurtful to feel that as a woman, as a black woman you have to prove to people your worth. Personally, my biggest obstacle that I care to share is believing in myself. Trusting that what God has for me is for me. Trusting and knowing that I deserve good things for me and my family.

What advice would you give someone thinking of starting a business?

Do your research, create a simple business plan, PRAY, check for the demand of your service or product in the area/ or lack of education about what you feel needs to be a demand. Glance at your competitors because they really don't matter.

How does it feel to make history as the first black woman to own, operate, and open an ultrasound studio in Greensboro, N.C. and make waves in the maternal health field?

Man, I feel good! I feel honored, I feel blessed that God has given me this vision and I followed him. I can't wait to see how this vision will continue to unfold. I'm really looking forward to making a major impact in the communities of women, through educating and advocating for themselves, around maternal health and infant mortality. I'm hoping to heal broken families that struggle with relationships after having children and lastly, I want women to visit my studio and feel taken care of, heard and learn a lot.

What has been the best business advice you have received to date?

Have a team, solid people around you that push, believe in you, and can help you when things become too much mentally.

Turn off work. Being a business owner you get too hungry to do everything. As the thought comes up, write it down and REST, be intuned with the moment of your family, friends or whatever is around you.
