She’s Bold, Brilliant, and Black: Meet Shade Adu
What experiences in your life have helped you to become the bold woman you are today?
God and my mother. Business is a faith walk, and I’m working on it daily. My family has been supportive, but my mother has been my biggest champion. I couldn’t have done this without her.
Who were your role models growing up, and how did they influence your path?
My big sister, the late Councilwoman Andrea C. McElroy. She mentored me from the 8th grade, giving me opportunities to travel, meet politicians, and attend important events. She helped me secure jobs, wrote letters of recommendation on my behalf, and truly cared for me like I was her own child. I've always had strong women in my life, and their support has meant the world to me.
As a Black woman, have you faced any unique challenges that have impacted your journey? How have you navigated moments of adversity?
Being an ambitious Black woman in America is challenging. I rely on prayer, a strong support system of mentors, and daily action to become 1% better each day. Even in the midst of challenges, I remind myself that everything always works out in my favor.
How do you want your life and work to impact your community and the world?
I want to leave a legacy that spans generations. I want my life to matter and to create lasting significance. Every day, I strive to leave my mark and make a meaningful impact.
What advice would you give to other Black women about owning their brilliance in spaces that attempt to dim their light?
Take up space—boldly. Know that you belong in the room. You can and will succeed. But don’t just stop there—open the door for someone else. Leave your mark and bring others with you. Also, create a safe space where you can be yourself without filters, whether it’s a group chat or a circle of trusted friends. Support is essential, especially in spaces not designed for you.
